ヤッベ!

the yakuza (japanese mafia)
like to drive around smoking cigs
and blasting sinister music out of gargantuan speakers
attached to the top of their black vans.
i caught them on parade this afternoon while exploring downtown Kashiwa.
i had to be kind of secretive with my video taking cuz i didn't exactly want them to
see a small american man filming their ultra-nationalist antics.

ヘビロテ

the music you listen to while on a journey such as this
is one of the most important aspects of creating lasting sentiment...
(in the iPod age, anyway)
it hasn't even been a month yet but here is my current
playlist of music that has already given me a 'holy-shit-i-live-in-japan'
sort of feeling. some of this music has been around for a long time and just starting to hit me the right way, while some of it i've discovered while being here in japan.
of course, this is all subject to change, as i'm sure it will.
but 'ere goes:

hitoribocchino - sakamoto kyu
transportation theme - savath y savalas
drop dub - king tubby
this unfolds - four tet
run - vampire weekend (didn't think it would happen but i'm enjoying their new disc, sans the first track...)
asking me lies - the replacements
blame it on cain - elvis costello
the caves of altimira - steely dan
bastards of young - the replacements
plastic people - four tet
fly - cornelius
zebra - beach house
great day today (four tet remix) - madvillian
polkadot blues - hudson mohawke
bird watching at inner forest - cornelius
afterburner - boris
good timin' - sakamoto kyu
diplomat's son - vampire weekend
feel it all around - washed out
counterpoint - delphic
mr. chin - king tubby vs. lee 'scratch' perry
mogu mogu - chinza dopeness
miagete - kyu sakamoto
star fruits surf rider - cornelius
button - shugo tokumaru
kitten's breaks - hnc
giving up the gun - vampire weekend ("your sword's grown old and rusty/burnt beneath the rising sun...")
they're blind - the replacements
mic check - cornelius
wedding - shugo tokumaru
island, is - volcano choir
new music machine - cornelius
border - king tubby

side note

i'm having an amazing time in japan,
it's an absolutely beautiful and fascinating country.
still a little overwhelmed by everything...
it's only been about 3 weeks since i've arrived...
hence the lack of 'serious' discourse about my trip thus far.
i'll stir up a good hunk of heartfelt, intellectual and
intellectually heartfelt writing in the weeks to come.
dont touch that dial.
er.

chari

went for a lil' bike ride in J.
the rural areas are so gorgeous.
lots of friendly people out and about on a nice saturday morning.
stopped at a pet store called 'vampire' on the way back.
they had some really great pets!!!
the monkey was only 80000yen.
check it out.

変な人

walking home from the bus stop there were some little kids playing outside.
when i walked passed them they stopped playing.
one little girl went "waaaa"
and then another one said "henna hito"
that means weird person.
it was way too cute to be offended by.

hukuro no yookoso

Also, i got a keitai denwa.
that means cell phone.
the whole thing works kind of different in japan--
people e-mail eachother's phones rather than text?
i think thats how it works? i dont really get it.
anyway, my cell phone email(?) is
suntory.boss.88@softbank.ne.jp
and i think if you send an email to that address i will get it on my phone.
for free.
so if anyone wants to try it please be my guest...

also also, my host dad brought us to his favorite place for dinner,
which was basically old country buffet, japan style.
but with actually good food.
each table had a grill built into it (yaki niku), so part of the buffet line
was plates and plates of various raw meats and fishes and pig tongues and
mini octopi, which you took back to the table and grilled yerself.
super sick. since it was a buffet, and im in japan, we made a battle out of it.
my results:
2 bowls of miso soup
3 bowls of white rice
1 baby octopus
4 pig tongues
10 cuts of beef
6 pieces of sashimi (sushi)
20-and-some-odd edamame
3 shrimp tempura guys
a cup of flan
1 red bean mochi
1 piece of honeydew
and some calpis milk water to wash it all down

i didn't win.

good night.

yaku doshi

so my host mom is turning 32 this year.
in japan, even among the non-religious, this age (along with many others)
is considered to be an age of bad luck for women, and a year when
that individual is most likely to experience calamities or hardship.

it is also common for individuals turning these unlucky ages
to visit a temple or a shrine to have the unlucky spirits cast out
to prevent a year of misfortune.

my host parents woke me up early sunday morning.
we ate a quick breakfast and drank tea,
then hopped in the car and drove about an hour and a half
north of Chiba to Ibaraki prefecture.

The site of the temple was beautiful;
we drove up under a huge toori gate,
made our way onto the grounds where there were
merchants set up outside the temple selling japanese artifacts
and pre-WWII paraphernalia. pretty boss.
old swords, rifles, cameras, paintings, wood works,
statues, vases, pipes, clothing, farming tools, etc etc.

i'd go into detail about the pre-ceremony process but i don't
know the names for any of the rituals so i'll skip it for now...
anyway, we took our shoes off and went inside the main shrine,
where priest dudes dressed in traditional shinto get-ups
began banging on taiko drums while the main monk chanted and waved
the anti-demon stick in the air.

this went on for about a half hour, during which we were
required to keep our heads bowed and remain completely silent.
it was totally boss.

the monks finally called the name of my host mother, waved the demon stick at her
and gave her a charm and scroll of good luck (i think)

anyway, pretty heavy stuff. something about eastern religious hits me much harder
than any christian church ceremony ever has, and that is definitely saying something.
glad i got to be a part of it deshou.

as always,
sugoi da ne.

a real shocker!!!!!!!!

received a small bowl of mystery substance with dinner;
took a bite, pretty tasty, sort of crunchy yet gooey.

me: kore yasai desu ka? (is this a vegetable?)

them (host parents): are-you-kidding-me stares, shaking their heads,
"nai, kurage" (no, its kurage)

me: kurage wa eigotte nani? (what is that in english?)

them, in unison: jellyfish.

oh and here's a cat wearing a dress!!!!!!!!

Cockroaches

To see cockroaches in your dream, signifies your need for renewal, rejuvenation and self-cleansing of your psychological, emotional, or spiritual being. You need to reevaluate major aspects of your life.

School has started...
I'm taking Japanese, Human Biology, Japan Today, Digital Photography and Music Theory, which i haven't been to yet and am going to replace with some international relations type course.
So far so good, and the kids at school are way way legit.
Plenty of skodes, as expected, but the anime-crazed mountain dew drinkers are heavily outweighed by totally cool guys and gals (cuties), lots of germans and frenchys as well as americans and japanese kids (duh).
I have close to a 2 hour commute each way every day, its kind of a bitch but it makes me feel like a japanese buisness man or something so thats cool... i get to spend lots of quality time with my ipod as well which never hurts. The japanese are very very orderly, everyone gets into little lines waiting for the train and bus; i've only messed this up a few times. the worst, but most hilarious incident happened just this morning...
It's commonly known that there is a pretty big problem with old japanese guys not being able to keep their hands to themselves on crowded trains... so the train companies came up with a pretty handy solution: a "women only" line for a "women only" train car. Pretty bizarre. Of course, not knowing this, i went and stood in a random line, paying no attention to the gender ratio, and was moments later scolded by about 3 platform officers, soon realizing what a horrible mistake i had made.
WHAT WAS I THINKING?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
Anyway, school is off to an alright start, its still school, of course, but at least i'm in japan eh?

I went bowling with Orson (staying with the same fam. as me) and his friend Eugene, who is 100% Ghanian but was raised in Japan so he acts/speaks like a native. Pretty interesting.

Saturday, January 9th. 9:08am

It has been a very crazy couple of days...
Kind of lost a sense of time but got a good night's sleep last night at my new crib.
Beautiful bus ride from Narita to Kashiwa, still haven't gotten the stupid grin off my face.
Host family is super rad, Katsuhiro used to be in a popular heavy metal band in Japan.
Lots of guitars laying around.
Their house is super nice; small and japanese of course, but very new and nice.
Kashiwa seems like a great city.
Typing in short concise sentences like i'm taking notes or something.
Probably am.
Lost my camera in Amsterdam, typical.
Will snag a new one in Akihabara or something later today.
Going to downtown Tokyo for orientation in a few hours....................
Lame post, still a little disoriented in the orient.

More to come...
